WSS '10 Round 1: Phillip Island

Racing got underway at the famous Phillip Island circuit in Australia this weekend with David Salom and Chaz Davies both qualifying in the second row for Team ParkinGO Triumph BE1 Racing. Team mates Jason Di Salvo and Sebastien Charpentier started from row 3 and 4 respectively.

Chaz Davies set the fastest lap of the race as he worked through to third position but after a fault on his bike deposited oil on the track, the race was red flagged.

The restart saw Salom become the leading Triumph rider making good progress to take an impressive fourth place at the flag. The result was even more impressive for Salom as he had missed opening day of practice due to a mix up with his race licence.

Fellow Triumph debutant, Jason DiSalvo, finished in eighth place after working his way pack, while Chaz Davies and Sebastien Charpentier had to settle for twelfth and thirteenth respectively. The disappointing finish for Davies resulted after electonic issues prevented him from showing his full potential.

Charpentier is still getting a good feel for the bike following his 2 year absence. The frenchman hopes that some small changes to be made to his bike will enable him have more sensitivity in the fast corners and the race atmosphere itself will help to overcome this obstacle.

Commenting on his race, Salom said: "I knew I could score a good result but, given the race outcome, a podium result would've been possible. However, I'm sure there'll be other opportunies but the important thing is that we kicked off the season with a good result, which puts me fourth in the standings. I'm sorry I couldn't get a better start the second time around. I'm sure I could've battled with Lascorz and Sofuoglu for the podium."

In the support races, young Daytona 675 rider Christian Casella had a win on Triumph’s debut in the Australian championships. He won the weekend’s opening supersport race and finished fourth in the second leg to sit second overall in the championship.

March 28 sees the European season of the Supersport World Championship start at the Portimao circuit in Portugal.
