Weekend racing update: Triumph's Richards dominates at Croft
Tuesday, September 16, 2008

Starting from the front row, Richards grabbed the holeshot to lead the opening laps, only for the race to be stopped when another rider crashed and required medical attention.
The Triumph rider didn’t get such a good start for the 10-lap restart, following Suzuki’s Ian Lowry for several laps before finding a way through. Lowry later crashed out as he tried to keep up with Richards’ Daytona 675, allowing the Triumph rider to win by 1.627 seconds from Honda rider James Westmoreland. Richards was quick to pay tribute to the Daytona 675 after the race, saying that it was the “fastest bike out there.”
Richards leads Yamaha’s South African rider Hudson Kennaugh by 46 points with two rounds of the championship remaining, meaning that 11th place or better next time out at Silverstone will see Triumph secure a British championship to go alongside Arne Tode’s German title.
In a good day for MAP Embassy Triumph, factory development rider Paul Young grabbed a season’s best fifth at Croft. The Daytona 675 looked like the bike to have at the tight and bumpy Yorkshire circuit thanks to its torquey three-cylinder engine and excellent corner speed.
The penultimate round of the championship takes place at Silverstone in two weeks’ time.
